Reed Gold Mine Visit

Midland, North Carolina

Our Charlotte Region’s May event took us on a golden adventure—literally! We fired up our beloved British classics for the annual May Drive and Picnic, with this year’s destination being the historic Reed Gold Mine in Midland, NC—the very site of America’s first documented gold discovery. Back in 1799, young Conrad Reed stumbled upon a 17-pound nugget right on this land, launching the nation’s first gold rush and forever changing North Carolina’s place in economic history.

Although our group was small—just seven enthusiasts strong—the camaraderie and charm of the day made it a standout experience. We cruised the scenic backroads, arriving in style with our Triumphs gleaming. Once at the mine, we enjoyed a relaxing picnic lunch, explored the fascinating museum, and took in the beauty of the restored underground tunnels. A few curious onlookers, including some scouts, couldn’t resist asking, “What kind of cars are those?” —giving us the perfect chance to share our love for Triumphs and the legacy of British motoring.

A heartfelt thank-you goes to Steve Ward, Janet and Ralph Jannelli, Tim Green, and Jeanie and Scott Huff for joining in the fun and braving the early morning rain. You helped make this year’s outing truly special! I would also like to extend a special thanks to the Reed Gold Mine staff for providing a space to park our wonderful cars!
